Understanding the terminology

Racism: The belief that different races possess distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities, especially so as to distinguish them as inferior or superior to one another.

Bias: Rather than being neutral, we have a preference for (or aversion to) a person or group of people.

Implicit bias: Associating a stereotype or having an attitude towards a person or group of people without conscious knowledge.

Personal bias: To have personal biases is to be human. We all hold our own subjective world views and are influenced and shaped by our experiences, beliefs, values, education, family, friends, peers and others. Being aware of one's biases is vital to both personal well-being and professional success.

Most of the time our behaviour is triggered at the implicit level, in a split second. We can change our behaviour by being mindful and slowing down our thinking.
